Week Links Post - 12

Yellowtrace blogs about the 'badass embroidery' of Ana Teresa Barboza, and they aren't kidding around. Amazing stuff!  Check that out HERE.

At Twisted Sifter, they're showing Kumi Yamashita's latest portraiture work made from a single, continuous thread, HERE and speaking of thread...

... Textile Arts Centre has a link to a new catolouge of the work of pioneering sculptor Eva Hesse, who worked with fibres in what would now be viewed in a contemporary way HERE

Canadian artist Leah Hughes has made an incredibly beautiful piece, called 'Nature's Offering' HERE

Kate Vrijmoet has a link to an article about the implications of donating your art.

Side note, after I had been quilting for about a year, I donated a baby quilt to the law firm I was working for at the time in their yearly fundraiser for Unicef (which is totally a thing in law firms here in Toronto - extremely competitive!) So, I donate the quilt and set a reserve price of $50, thinking it would go much higher. On the day of, I found it literally folded as small as it would go and tucked away in a corner, with a bunch of other things for sale arranged around it as if it were a piece of fabric the other objects were displayed against. Unsurprisingly, when I asked the organizer what happened to the quilt, he told me he purchased it at the reserve price as a gift for his niece, who was expecting.

I vowed to NEVER donate again, as it seemed the whole purpose was to get my work 'for a steal'. The organizers don't care whether your work is devalued or not - $50 is $50 more than they had in their pocket, and they don't think about the cost to you in materials, time, or pride.  Ugh.

Anyway - sidenote ended. lol Kate offers many more, superior reasons to not donate your work to charity, HERE

Throwing you a curveball, Terry Grant has a post about the state of blogging HERE - very interesting post and (rather ironically) equally interesting comments!

Over at World Of Threads, curator interview Part 2 with Gareth Bate is a feast for the senses, with links to great artists, sites, a peek at a show I could KICK myself for missing, thoughtful conversation about the art vs. craft debate, and the place of fibre art in fine art (the only thing I disagree with him about is the fibre art as painting thing, but it certainly gives me a hint about how I should enter pieces at World of Threads!) - anyway, it's a fascinating interview and you should totally check it out HERE

And very last but not least (smile); in the last 8 years I have gained a shocking 80 pounds. (I`ll stop and wait for your collective gasp.)

I have decided to lose that 80 pounds (plus the extra 10 I was carrying before the great weight gain happened - or 8 sizes, whichever comes first), and in order to motivate myself and ensure I actually stick to it - I am BLOGGING about it. (I kind of scared myself with that one, too!)

Since I just started, I only have seven posts (I'm blogging every day over there); but if you're of a mind, or even better -  a like mind - come and follow along HERE.

See you Monday!

  1. That embroidery is definitely badass. I've not seen anything like it. Thanks for the links. I'll have to make myself a cup of tea and go exploring.

  2. Before I go off to read all the links I've opened in other tabs (!)...I've fought weight all my life (inherited "built like a box" from my father's family), so I commiserate...and will follow you down that road. Making art helps!

  3. Clicked on a few links. Great post. Congrats on the fitness goal! It's so important to take care of yourself! I'm afraid my blogging and blog reading has also become less and less. In such a visual world, I think places like Instagram and Pinterest have trumped blogs, but nothing beats them when it comes to explaining a technique, or getting a longer message across. They give a much bigger "picture" ;-). I'm rarely donating quilts anymore for similar reasons. Your experience just stinks.

  5. As always, I love these linky posts (and notice I'm leaving a comment 😜). I've promised myself I'd loose the extra 40 lbs I've added on too, so I will certainly follow you journey. Good luck to us both🍓👍!

  7. Stunning work by Kumi Yamashita. The donation thing has been discussed on the SAQA Yahoo group as the benefit action is coming up soon , as has the Gareth Bate interview. As you can image the views are many and varied on both. Just going to see what Terry has to say about blogging.
