Surprise Giveaway!

ETA: GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED.

Winner will be announced on Monday.  Cheers, dears!

Would Barb and Sharon report to the front desk, please?

As you know, I don't usually do Saturday posts, but I reached a rather silly personal goal this week and I had always planned that if I achieved that goal, I would acknowledge it with a giveaway.

But first, I have to tell you a story. :)

Before I started blogging here under my own name, some of you will remember, I had another blog, Diva Quilts. It was where I began when I first started quilting in 2008, excitedly sharing what I was so proud of, with my horrible photos and quite badly made quilts.  lol

And I was out here in the universe all by myself - so I was so excited when all of sudden, I had my first followers: Crystal at Sonnet of the Moon, and Elaine at La Belle Helene. I wasn't talking to myself any more!

By 2010 I had started to explore art quilting. I wasn't much good, and most of my regular readers weren't very interested in what I was doing - they seemed to want me to post finished quilts, go "Ta da!" and move on - or at least that was my supposition when former followers began fleeing my blog in droves!  lol  At one point, I had nearly 300 followers, but by December of 2010 it had trickled down to 128.

So I started another blog, where I would chronicle my art quilting experiments. I called it "Coneflowers In Leslieville" (I live in a suburb of Toronto, called Leslieville.)

That blog was pretty much a failure. (After a year, I had 27 followers.) I didn't tend it properly, felt torn between two worlds (quilting and art making) and after a year of doing both blogs and not making any great strides with either;  I closed it, combined all of my previous content from both blogs here and I said to myself:

I'm going to do what I want to do and hope that SOMEBODY will like it. But even if they don't, I'M DOING IT ANYWAY!

There may have been some puny fist shaking as well. :D

It started off pretty slowly.  A handful of people from my Diva Quilts blog followed me here, and a couple from Coneflowers too (bless their hearts!); but in the first month I had only 14 followers.  And so it became a running joke between BSP and I that a blog I hadn't even blogged on in 2 months, 4 months, 5 months - not only had more followers than the blog I was actively posting at, but actually had more HITS although I hadn't posted there in 5 months!

When I hit the six month mark here, I had about 45 followers, and was finally getting more hits than Diva Quilts did.  I figured I had reached a turning point, and set a secret goal for myself - I wanted to have as many followers here by my first anniversary as I did at Diva Quilts.

Well, thanks to Barb and Sharon at Wit's End, I reached that goal this week! Nearly two months before my actual goal date. You two are collectively my 128th followers! So, thank you for helping me reach that goal!

As for the REST of you - all of you are the ones who have helped me achieve this goal after all, so I wanted to thank you.  One of you will win the stack of fabric as shown above (Buddha not included). :)  There are two lengths each of  two Kaffe Fasset prints, a Robert Kauffman floral and then two lengths of solid purple cotton (not Kona).  Combined, there are a couple of yards of fabric.

Leave a comment on this post, and one of you will win that stack of fabric!

Thanks for coming along with me. I'm so glad you're here.

You're all awesome,
Photobucket

  2. It must have been frustrating for an old dormant project to have been getting more hits than your current blog. I'm glad you've tipped the balance.

  4. That's so sweet of you! I love surprises like these! Thanks for hosting a giveaway!

I think what you might have seen as people not interested in your work was for a totally different reason. I went on a long quilting/sewing/internet hiatus last year, a sabbatical more like. When I came back at the beginning of this year, I noticed that I wasn't the only one in quilting blog-land to do it, though I may have been one of the longest to stay away. A lot of people were posting that they hadn't been quilting or blogging for months and had just gotten back to it, myself included. Instead of looking back at the thousands of unread posts in my Google Reader, I marked them all read and started over. It took me a few weeks to figure out your other blogs weren't posting and to find your new one. I've been following/cyber stalking you since you used to post on Live Journal! I love your quilts and I always love to see what you do next because I find it exciting and daring! Some day, I'm going to work up the courage to do what you do. You're one of my quilting inspirations.

  5. Oh Kit....I was both sad and happy reading this post. Sad because truly, in my humble opinion the number of followers doesn't reflect how good or bad your art/posts are. For one thing.....years ago there weren't many quilters that posted to blogs....so obtaining followers may have been easier to achieve. Now the competition is much greater......so increasing the number of followers may actually be more difficult, even if your art/blog is better.

Your excitment of reaching your goal is evident....so I'm happy for you. But please everyone, don't ever gauge your success by how many followers you have.....personal growth is just as important!

With that said....don't STOP posting....I look forward to your journey!

  6. I'm glad your numbers of followers are so high although some of my favourite blogs have less than 100 followers!!
I think I started following you when I was looking for Charley Harper quilts!

  7. I'm glad you've met your personal goal - it is always good to have a goal to strive for! I've popped in and out of your blog for sometime, but only just recently became a follower. I am glad I have as I enjoy seeing your work and progress on your projects.

I must be one of your early followers, then. I never really paid much attention to which blog it was once I could read it in Google Reader, I just knew it was your work and followed it as such. I love seeing both your art quilts and your utility quilts, in all stages of completion. Stop fretting about what people want to see and just write about what moves you - your work is excellent, you don't need to do this for us, do it for you!

  9. I remember you from somewhere and I'm liking how you show some of the process, mental or actual. While I'm not into counting, it is nice to know one isn't talking to oneself! ;^) Nice fabrics.

  10. I remember finding your other blogs and having one or both of them point to this one. As I used to live in East York and loved Leslieville, I was curious about you. So glad I found you, Kit! Keep up the great work and thanks for the giveaway!

  13. I love the purple and blue combination!
Like you, I often think that people don't read my blog and I get a bit bummed, but then I think about it and realize that read it or not, I enjoy doing it and that's what matters. Although it would be a blast to have thousands of readers/followers, I think it would make me feel pressured to always be posting and critiqing my projects more for other people than myslef. So, to make a long story short (too late, I know), I write what I want, when I want and hope that those who do read it enjoy it.
Just or fun, I looked at the stats for my blog and found it interesting t see when and from where I'm getting page hits. See if you can view your history. You might be surprised at how many people read your blog, but aren't followers.

  15. Whoa! Love the fabric. Love your blog! FWIW, I've been blogging for well over 2 years, and just reached 75 followers. But oh, what wonderful people I've met through blogs. I'll take quality over quantity any day!!

  16. I enjoy your blog. I found you not to long ago. I like also that you are a Canadian and live only an hour away. I became interested in art quilting and mixed media 2 years ago. I though that I didn't have any friends who like to quilt... now I have even less who think art quilting is fun! lol
Still I go to one traditional guild and have recently joined a fiber arts guild so all is good and I can play in both genres!
Congrats on reaching your blog goal!
(I only have three followers and you are one! )

  19. Thanks for the history. I am sure it will help many who may be going through what you have and encourage those of us are 'thinking' about blogging.

But I think is so fantastic is you showing how you get to where you are going. I know of no other blog that does this. And Becky is correct, do what YOU love!!!!

Your color combinations are my all time favorites. Thank you for having a give away.
