I always start with a reference photo, and I always write the photographer and ask for permission*.

In this case, the photographer did not give me permission (the first time that happened), so I am using the branch in the photo, but have put the bird in a different position - the head still in profile, but now we'll be looking at the bird from the back and to the side - rather than a straight on front view.

Mes voila!

The really for real final bird in the series, so we end where we began, with Green Headed Tanager.

Ta da! Bird Number Ten!

This one's a red-bellied woodpecker and is what started the whole bird series in the first place. The reference photo (which I don't have permission to post, here) is what inspired it all.

But he came last, because I couldn't figure out how to make the snow. Turns out - it was french knots!

At various points, having made various birds, various people have said to me "this is my favourite one!" Well guess what?

This is MY favourite one! I love the background, the way the tree branches look like the evergreen bark I remember; the needle-y foliage and my bird. I love it, even if I do say so myself!

So, let's check out this bird, shall we?

All done!

Okay, I need to paint in that little stretch on the hem and I also need to paint the sides of the mounting board, but otherwise, it's done. :)

So, first things first: - here's my finished bird - a golden headed blackbird - and check out that foliage! Five layers of stitching - but well worth it. :)

This actually isn't part of the bird series, it was a Christmas gift for my dear friend, Beth Berman of SewSew Art. Beth loves crows - so I thought I'd make her one. :)

Okay!

I'm finished the first bird - and for a trial run, it's pretty cute. :)

But there are a lot of things I'm going to change on the next one.
