Lord Simcoe

Today is a Monday long weekend here - known as "Simcoe Day".

Today we celebrate (or give thanks!) for Lord John Simcoe.

He was a pretty cool dude, with an interesting military, political and judicial career. He introduced trial by jury, the basis of modern courts and established the City of York - later known as the City of Toronto.

The coolest thing he ever did though?  He abolished slavery in Upper Canada.  Thanks Lord Simcoe! It's celebrate *you* day!

Enjoy your Monday, I'll see you on Wednesday!

  1. here in Manitoba we have a much less exciting holiday -- it's called the "Civic Holiday" thanks for the background on Simcoe -- I live near a street named after him, and my kids attended Laura Secord school, and there's an Isaac Brock school nearby, as well as a Wolseley school.

  4. Two weeks ago I had lunch at the old brickworks off the DVP. We walked/hiked there from her place in Leaside. On the way back we passed an apartment complex..2 stories set in a U shape. Holly said the building was originally Lord Simcoes house. It was such a gracious building with amazing gardens, just loved it. I didn't know Lord Simcoes changed the judicial system in such a profound manner. Thanks for the history lesson. I guess I didn't pay close enough attention in gr 4 .
