However, I guess these two are a post-modern version of Nan and Bert - given that they're a: Black, and b: have something very different to say than Nan and Bert might have!

I started by painting a girl twin first - just with acrylic paint, straight onto a piece of cloth. I didn't prime the piece first or put any gesso on it. Another quilt artist who paints on fabric told me she doesn't gesso first so I thought I'd give it a shot.   It made the paint kind of crunchy once it dried, but she may use different acrylic paints (I use Golden acrylics).
 



And then I quilted her!

Do you remember when I made Ontology of a Rabbit? The background fabric in it was a piece of rust-dyed fabric. I knew immediately what I wanted to do with the rest of it so I decided that it was time to put that idea to the test!





I also had a piece of hand-dyed fabric from Vicki Welsh that was a lovely complementary colourway - and combined it with the rust-dyed piece to make something cool.  

I fused them both and began cutting them out, ironing them on, and now comes the labourious process of stitching them all down with invisible thread.
