Orange You Glad I Did?

My friend Crystal was talking on her blog the other day about quilting without obligation - in other words, just quilting what you want, when you want - as the spirit moves you.. Although I fully subscribe to the idea - sadly, I am not of that ilk.

There are quilts that only exist in my head that I want to create, new directions I want to go - experiments I want to make! But until that growing-ever-smaller pile of WIPs in my sewing room is down to none - I'll never quite be able to move on.

So, here is one that you may remember from a looooooong time ago. :) This quilt has been "in production" for quite some time. It took me a very long time to make all those HSTs - like the time I made a nine-patch - those little HSTs looked way easier than they actually were (who knew they'd be so finicky?) and by the time I'd done 30 or so, I regretted having cut for a queen sized quilt.  I wasn't often moved to work on them, so it took me several months to actually make the top.

And then it took several months more for me to buy backing fabric for it  - after all, there are such wonders in a fabric store, when there - who wants to buy plain cream cotton? :)  It took more discipline than I had. (Although, if I follow my bliss, there's going to be a lot more plain cream, plain white, plain black. plain yellow...etc. in my future.  Funny, that!)

And then when I finally got that backing fabric (a 50% off sale made it irresistable) and then batted and basted and had it ready to go - well, there were so many other projects that I could do before this one, projects that would be more "fun" or more "challenging" or...?  So it sat around, ready to quilt for months (and months).

(I love the pieced binding on this one - it's the left over HST's.)

I seriously only finished this quilt this weekend because it was either that, or go out and buy more pins (!) which struck me as completely ridiculous when I have a bajillion pins of all kinds - they're just all in use. (There are distcint advantages to getting your WIPs wrapped up - one of which will be a pleothora of pins availalbe for use at all times! )

Anyway Orange You Glad? is done. And the good thing is, I have only two more queen sized quilts to quilt, and three laps to quilt, and then I have completed my WIPs and can joyfully and freely move forward!

And to me - that will be quilting without obgliation!

  4. Lovely quilt and gorgeous colours! I tend to run out of knitting needles for exactly the same reason:) but it's a good feeling to know there is one less UFO lurking about making me feel a bit guilty. I would like to be a maker without obligation too but only after I get all those unfinished things done - who knows, I may not fall back into bad habits...... :)

  5. I know exactly how you feel. A few months ago I decided I didn't want anymore half finished quilt tops sitting around so I finished them all. I twas so freeing. They are still in the porcess of being quilted but at least there aren't stray blocks laying around.

  7. I wish you great success in getting your wip's done! I'm really so excited to see your "real" quilts. :)

But this quilt is so very beautiful! You know I love HST but can't stand making them...so I'm totally jealous. Once again, a striking and original quilt!
