When I conceived of this quilt, I remember thinking "I want to make a contemporary quilt - you know, something that's of the moment". And as I put these silks together in this particular configuration, I wondered whether this quilt was not only of the moment, but whether its design would stand the test of time.
I quilted it very simply (but time consumingly!!!!!) in straight lines of two different varigated threads - one in purples and one in a fuschia/green/yellow.
I was pleased with the result (even taking into account the wonky back) and love, love, LOVE the hand this quilt has - which is, I think, as a result of the quilting and the fabrics.
BSP says that people's couches are getting smaller and smaller as we adjust to big city living and that my laps are too big to use as a throw. If it's meant to be decorative only, than sure, it could be smaller, but to cuddle under - bigger is better, I thought. What are yours?
Bigger is always better. I have 1 quilt that is too narrow & Gave away one that was too short. (I like to tuck under my chin & to have my feet burrowed in as well.)
ReplyDeleteStunning....just stunning. The colors, the quilting - it's all just stunning! (need I say more?)
ReplyDeleteLove the color combination! This quilt is pretty mesmerizing!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Great color palette!
ReplyDeletebigger is better, and i just love love it too.
ReplyDelete:) thanks Marty!
ReplyDeletethank you Fran. I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes it!
ReplyDeletethanks Yetunde! (I'm glad there is some agreement with me that bigger is better. :) )
ReplyDeleteThanks Vicki! I saw a painting a few years ago using this colour combination and immediately thought I'd like to make quilt in those same colours . I'm glad I FINALLY got around to doing it!
ReplyDeleteI can't take credit for the colour combination, I saw a painting using these colours a couple of years ago and decided then that i wanted to make a quilt in this pallette. In fact, I bought the silks right after I saw the painting!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks! :)
I agree with bigger is better, if the quilt is going to be used. I've made smaller lap quilts that end up never being used and that makes me feel like I've wasted my time and materials. Furniture might be getting smaller, but people aren't!
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is just lovely! I love how simple and graphic it is. I love the sheen of the fabric and wish I could reach into my computer and touch it. I would never have thought of this color combination, but it is simply stunning.
big is good. I do have a smaller blanket though, a crocheted one, that I love if I just want something over my legs.
ReplyDeletehmm - oddly, I love the back of this quilt much more than the front. not sure why. lovely work as always
I often like the backs of people's quilts more than the fronts. :) These days, I'm consciously trying to make my quilts reversible. :)
ReplyDeleteHey Kit, I seen green, brown and purple, or is that violet. Well the quilt is just lovely, lovely, lovely. I too like the quilt for cuddling long enought to tuck my 5' 9" frame under and not have to worry about my toes getting cold. I'll take it. LOL
ReplyDeleteCarol
Carol, it's a coppery brown, lime green and lavendar. (And thanks!)
ReplyDeleteThe consensus seems to be bigger is better . I love it when I'm right! :)
This is beautiful! Purple and green are nice together!
ReplyDeleteI make most of my quilts about 60x80. I like to use them on the couch all by myself (Ian is always hot) and I hate to have any part of me not under a quilt. They also fit a queen bed with no overhang...so big enough for most applications but not too big.
Gorgeous work, as usual! I love the quilting, and the composition of both sides is just wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThanks Britt! :)
ReplyDeleteAnother member of the big girl club! :) (My queens are usually 93 or 94 by 103 or 104. )
ReplyDeleteHi! I'm here from Livejournal. First of all, I love this quilt. You always make such beautiful quilts. I wish I was that talented! Second, I agree with you, bigger is better when it comes to quilts. I can always fold or tuck in the extra, but if it isn't big enough to cover me fully, then no dice. I'd rather have the quilt hang off the couch or bed than have a draft coming in under the edge because it's too small. I'm a very short, petite person, but I don't like using typical lap throws because some body part always sticks out.
ReplyDeleteHi Amie - thanks for coming by and for leaving a comment! :) And I'm so glad that people agree with me about the size. :)
ReplyDeleteKit, I absolutely love this quilt. I love the color and the design. Simplicity with great punch. Along with the majority of the commentators, I prefer larger quilts too. I read somewhere recently where smaller wall hangings were referred to as dust catchers. Now, I don't agree with that, because I've seen some exceptional pieces that were small works of art. I just wish I had wall space to do more than circulate my larger pieces, that is, when I'm not cuddling beneath them.
ReplyDelete:) I've never heard of small quilts referred to as dust catchers, but I certainly could see them being so in the literal sense!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks re the quilt!
Absolument superbe !!!! (Very wonderful !!!!)
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Cyrielle. And thanks for stopping by! :)
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is beautiful. I love the colour combination, so striking. And the pattern is beautifully contemporary. Am I right in assuming that you designed the pattern yourself?
ReplyDeleteThank you. Yes, I've designed all my quilts for the last couple of years. I'm glad you like it. :)
ReplyDeleteI really like this. I think the design is very interesting and the quilting lines add beautiful texture.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much, Terri!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
