GIVEAWAY and backwards post!

The bird I'm working on this week is one that I've wanted to make since the beginning - but I didn't know how.  After having done the Fairy Wren, I sure know how to make a french knot -and realized that that was what I needed to know to make all the snow on those branches.

More on the berries and the giveaway, after the jump!

Speaking of berries - I started with plain red fabric and then added oil pastels in orange, light orange, a pinky-beige and purple.  The pastels started rubbing off almost immediately as I worked, so re-applied and decided to seal  - but what to seal with - I had nothing in my stash.

I decided to paint on some transparent base extender for fabric (I also have one for paper but am not sure it would work) and see if it would seal the pastels; but the fabric version sure did!

And above, you can see where I had marked the placement of the berries in order to work on my knots in the car.

And now to the giveaway!

You may remember that back in the fall, I did a giveaway for Jennifer Chiaverini's book "The Giving Quilt".  Well, today is the day the paperback is released and I'm doing a giveaway for a copy of  - you guessed it - the paper back version, along with these two pins.

In fact, I have TWO copies of the book, along with two sets of the pins; so there will be two winners!

Leave a comment for the giveaway (sorry, Canada and the US only); and I'll send you a copy along with the pins.

Giveaway is open until the end of the week.

Good luck!

  1. How can you embroider in the car???? That would make me woozy, but I love the texture of the snow - and so topical at the moment in the rather un-spring like weather we are having here. Lovely machine quilting by the way. Mine has gone a bit awol of late - tension issues!!

  5. Of course I'd enjoy reading Jennifer's book.....but I also wanted to tell you how interesting I'm finding the process photos and technicial solutions you've been posting for the bird series. Most of all...how fabulous the finished pieces are!!!

  6. I'm posting mainly about the berries and bird, rather than the book, though I have enjoyed Ms. Chiaverini's work and wouldn't be averse to winning! :-) I'm wondering what you used to apply oil paint stick to the berries...? And I love the French knots, with a sprinkling of beads, for snow. You and Monika K-W must be the French knot queens on the Canadian embroidery scene!

    1. posting my answer here, in case others are interested - I used oil pastels (for paper) not an oil stick; and I just stroked or splooched a spot directly on the fabric, and then blended it with my finger as you would on fabric. Hope that helps! :D

  8. I am very excited about all the snow which looks fabulous. Base extender is exactly what I use to "secure" fugitive media. You can also use half Elmers white glue and half water which dries clear.

  14. The white french knots look visually wonderful with the red berries against the background you've chosen...Lovely:)

  15. I love the background! The french knots really are perfect...labour intensive, but perfect. Bill, my husband always kids me when I tell people I do hand stitching in the car. "Oh sure, it's okay to stitch while driving but no hand held electronics..." LOL

  16. I love your fabulous work. Thanks for the giveaway, too! I think people who say they don't have the patience are really saying they don't have the talent and passion. I'm glad you do!
