Dude... what happened? or Adventures with Lutradur

Okay. So, as you know, I work with Lutradur. I mean, I work with Lutradur a LOT.

Some people get pretty crazy with it - melting it, burning it, moulding it, all kinds of stuff. I paint it, and pretty much stick to that, because I have yet to experiment with all the permutations of "paint" that I could do with Lutradur - I like to "master" something (if I can) before I move on from it.

So, I had an idea for a piece I wanted to make.
For quite some time, I've wanted to make a piece entirely out of Lutradur.  But since I work relatively large, I was somewhat hesitant to give it a go. If it didn't work out, there might be quite a lot of work involved only to have to do it again.

But then I was presented with an opportunity - a particular show required a small-ish piece - 20 x 20 - and I decided that this was my chance to make that Lutradur piece a reality.

My idea required an evening sky for the background - so I began by painting a length of Lutradur with my standard acrylic paints. Ordinarily, I dry my Lutradur flat on commercial size cookie trays. The resulting painted product has a suede-y finish on one side and dulled down, dry-looking finish on the other. Depending on its intended use, I'll use either side.

However, I did something different during the process this time (it's top secret though I'll share what I did in another post) and look what happened!

I wasn't sure how it would stand up to what I usually put my painted Lutradur through though, so I decided to make a small, thematically similar 12 x 12 piece and a larger, 20 x 20 piece with the "dull" side.

Here's what I've got so far.

And then I painted some more Lutradur with a combination of purple and black to make - you guessed it - a tree!

Stay tuned for what happens next!

See you Friday.

  3. Very rich effects. What weight Lutrador do you use? It looks very different to the kind I have.
