In the home stretch...

I really thought I would have a finished piece for you today - I only had a bit too finish, and though I knew I would be on vacation all last week, I figured it would only take Monday and Tuesday night to finish up.

Alas - I was so pooped on Monday night that I went to bed at 8:30 p.m. (!) and then, it turned out, I had a lot more to do than I expected. I don't want to 'spoil' the surprise of the big finish, so I'm only going to show you a bit of the work I've done since we checked in last.

So...

The 'bloodlines' last looked like this, and having looked at that photo, I thought they needed more work.

So now, they look like this. More veining is better, I think.

I also made a lot of critters for the piece, the deer you saw on Monday, and you see the owl, above - there are more, including the fox on the left. But that's all you'll get to see for today.

Once all of my critters were in place, the upper part of the piece began to look pretty imbalanced, so I had to bulk it up with some more leaves - this time in oranges and orange-y reds, rather than the yellows - and besides being hand cut, they had to be  hand-stitched down, which was an unexpected and time-added detail.

So, more critters, more leaves, more veins, a few more stars, oh yes - I knocked back some of the bright blues, and tried a new glossing product from Liquitex with really good results as I found the layers of paint were beginning to look dry, and worse yet - were getting stiff.

Stiff paint eventually becomes cracked paint, and often, torn fabric. I found Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish, which not only took away the dry look, it also makes my piece more flexible, and makes the work water resistant. (Woohoo!)

So, though I expect the piece really will be finished by Friday, I'm not sure whether I'll show it to you then with my Week Links post, or whether I'll show you it on Monday.

Guess you'll have to stay tuned to find out! ;)

See you then!

The veins are definitely looking good and it will be good to see the finished piece. Interesting about the Liquitex making the the piece more flexible
